Game/Space: An Interview with Daniel Dociu

Find it here|||good stuff

And for those lazy ones in the audience. He's the art designer for Guild Wars.|||That interview contains a lot of amazing concept art pieces from Daniel Dociu. I know that I will keep buying all future ArenaNet products as long as he is there!|||Very impressive, I dunno what he's making atm but he deserves a big raise!|||Yeah, more of Dociu's great work on display here, but really, this makes me think of Le Corbusier's famous quote "a house is a machine built for living in." That view of architecture is a long way removed from what we see in-game.

We all know there is very little interaction with the built environment in the game. The few buildings we can enter are palatial in scale and are more like exercises in set building rather than architecture. Inside, they work like the interiors of boxes - they're just prettier. They aren't substantially different to outdoor environments, though.

Very little, if any, consideration needs to be given to the practical demands of engineering and construction. In fact, being set in a fantasy realm demands some degree of departure from the mundane and realistic. The floating castles or mosques, for example. Dociu's main concern is with creating ambience. I'm surprised his illustrations have attracted the attention of "serious" architects.

I hope GW2 gives us real reasons to discuss architecture as seen and experienced in the game.|||Quote:

Guild Wars II, one hopes.|||The official site has caught onto the article, with the following blurb:

The folks over at the architectural blog, BLDGBLOG, have posted an interview with our Art Director, Daniel Dociu. In this article, Daniel discusses what inspires him and provides detailed insight into the creation process of many of his pieces. Head over to the blog to see what Daniel has to say.|||He is just simply the best and excited Arenanet has him making Guild Wars look awesome. Can only imagine what he has in store for us for Guild Wars 2.|||I wonder why AntiVir list the page as a potential Malware/Trojan site.
